“Ku Klux Klan” Flyer at Hope College

News reports over the weekend indicate that a racist poster inviting students to join a fraternity similar to the Ku Klux Klan was found posted in the dorms at Hope College in Holland, Michigan.

The poster features a picture of Confederate leader Robert E. Lee and tells students that they can join “KAPPA KAPPA KAPPA.” The events listed on the flyer include a “Sheet Party,” “Confederate Literature Night,” and a “Meet the Kleagle” event. A “Kleagle” is an officer in the Ku Klux Klan who is responsible for recruiting new members. There is no contact information given on the flyer.

According to reporting in The Holland Sentinel Hope College is making progress towards identifying the student(s) responsible for the flyer:

[Hope College President James ] Bultman reported that “significant progress had been made in identifying the circumstances that led to this posting,” but wouldn’t share details because of concerns about student privacy.

Sawyer said a student connected to the flier had shown “remorse” and that the flier “wasn’t meant as what it was taken as.”

Hope College isn’t known for its tolerance: much of last year was spent debating whether or not the college creates an environment that is intolerant of LGBTQ students. After controversy erupted over its “human sexuality statement,” it was recently revised although LGBTQ student groups are still not recognized and it generally has an overriding anti-gay message.

The flyer is reprinted below:
